Children of Medellín:
At Glamping Jardín, we are not only dedicated to providing an escape into the wonderful nature of Antioquia, but also to supporting local initiatives and connecting with the people around us. A cause that lies close to our hearts is our partnership with Children of Medellín, an organization which makes a real difference in the lives of children from Bello Oriente. By supporting the children in the community with after-school programs, this foundation offers a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn, explore and grow.
Bello Oriente and it’s challenges
Nestled high in the hills overlooking the bustling city of Medellín lies the neighbourhood of Bello Oriente. This area is home to a mix of informal settlements, where families from Medellín and beyond have come to attempt and build a better life. This area is often overlooked due to economic hardships. The neighbourhood is not included in Medellín’s urban development plans and thus they rely most of the time on foundations and their own inventive abilities to create a better life.
After school activities
After going to school (which is obligatory for the children who are participating) the activities vary. As once started with playing soccer with the kids, this is still a big part of the activities! There are serveral boys and girls teams where they learn about playing together and listening to the trainer.
Also the music classes and dance lessons are popular among the children!
Besides the physical activities there are also English classes, computer classes, a group is learning about journalism while writing and creating there own magazine and a lot more! But most of all the children are having a safe place to play and learn!
Our experiences with Children of Medellin
While travelling around South America 7 years ago we came across Children of Medellin. After all the inequality that we saw in this continent we started supporting them to make a little difference. We really like that it is a small local foundation, no big management and large overhead costs so your money goes directly into the projects with the kids. It is a Dutch/Colombian foundation which makes it a good combination of Dutch efficiency with a Colombian heart and warmth,and of course the Colombian culture..
When we decided to move to Colombia we started with the “plan padrino” project and ever since we are supporting Maicol, an enthusiastic music lover with down syndrome. He’s been traveling with his mom around the country to find a safe place to live for the both of them and due to the support of the foundation they have a little bit of peace here. And he is having a blast playing the drums!
Although we have been visiting the foundation several times, every visit we are impressed by the power of the people working at the foundation and the children who are coming there!
We can make a difference together
By raising awareness of the foundation’s work, we hope to encourage our guests and members of our community here in Jardín to get involved. This can be done by volunteering, donating or simply spreading the word. We shared this blog today in light of Giving Tuesday. Due to some great donors all donations made from 26 november to 3 december 2024 will be multiplied so with your donation you can make double the impact.
