2 Hikes from the Center of Jardín You Can’t Miss
Jardín is more than the colorful main square where coffee flows non-stop. Within a few minutes of walking from the town center, you’ll find yourself among coffee plantations, on viewpoints with breathtaking views over the cute town, or under a refreshing waterfall. No car needed, no tour required — just put on your walking shoes and go. Here are two routes you shouldn’t miss during your stay in Jardín.
Camino de la Herrera – Mirador La Herrarita – La Garrucha
This loop, which you can start right from the town center, starts at “camino de la Herrera” an ancient path approximately 350 meters long, which has been designated a site of heritage interest since 1990. This cobbled path, surrounded by lush vegetation and rural houses, is the start of this an easy, well-maintained walk between coffee and banana plantations, past small farms and green hills. Along the way you’ll pass Cascada del Amor, a small waterfall worth a quick stop, a river with “charco corazon” (where you can swim if you want, be careful for the current) and a cave that’s home to bats — a fun surprise for the adventurous.
After the climb, you’ll reach the perfect spot for a break: the Mirador La Herrita. From here you get a panoramic view over the valley, with the town of Jardín visible in the distance — the perfect photo moment while refreshing with a fresh juice or a cold drink. The route ends at La Garrucha, a hand-operated cable car that carries you across the river. For a small fee you can ride it back down, or simply follow the path back to town.
Practical info:
- Distance: about 4 km (loop)
- Duration: 1 hour walking time at a relaxed pace ( calculate 2hrs with some stops)
- Difficulty: moderate, one steep section
- Best time: early morning, before the strongest sunlight
- Bring: plenty of water, sunscreen, and some cash for a drink at the mirador and the trip with La Garrucha
Cristo Rey — Café Jardín — Cascada La Escalera
This route starts from the square, going down to a river and than a steep climb to the Cristo Rey statue, towering high above town. From here you’ll have a great view over Jardín, surrounded by the green mountains of Antioquia — a spot you’ll want to linger longer than planned, the restaurant there has good food and it’s a nice option for a lunch!
From the viewpoint, continue on to Café Jardín, a mirador-café with other breathtaking mountain views. It’s the perfect stop for a good cup of coffee and a snack, right in the landscape where that coffee is actually grown.
Going down the road you walk relaxed and enjoy the views. Don’t forget to take the detour to Cascada La Escalera, a unique waterfall that cascades down natural stone steps. On warm days, a refreshing dip here is the perfect way to get yourself ready to walk the last stretch to town.
Looking for a hidden lunch spot? Our favorite restaurant “revolucion bananeras” is on the way back to town. Reserve a spot with them and enjoy a healthy and very delicious meal made from fresh vegetables from their own garden!
Practical info:
- Duration: 2 hours of walking time, including breaks usually around 3/4hrs
- Difficulty: moderate, suitable for most fitness levels
- Best time: early morning, before the strongest sunlight
- Bring: swimwear (for the waterfall), cash (for coffee, refreshment or lunch), insect repellent, plenty of water, sunscreen.
